My Practicum Reflective Report

My Practicum project underwent four major phases, as promised in the proposal; Research, curriculum creation, workshop construction, and workshop implementation. Phase one focused on research. This phase consisted of compiling possible resources, theories, and practices which could prove helpful in later phases. This also entailed the gathering of data through a survey to determine what fuels conflict within the community college system and what characterizes those conflict situations. This survey data aided me in creating themes and determining the basic direction for the project. Phase two, the creation of the curriculum, entailed me taking the previous research data and consolidating it into a curriculum. In the process, not all research from phase one was used, but rather only the information which related directly back to my target audience (based on their survey results) and the direction I felt the Practicum needed to go. I began with brainstorming, determining what needed to be incorporated. This involved me creating learning objectives and then creating an outline which would address and meet those objectives. Once this was completed, I expanded on the outline, creating a through curriculum which met both my objective goals and audience goals. This was the most important and difficult phase, as it set how successful the workshop would be. After meeting with a professor, I realized the initial curriculum I had created forgot to take in account my target audience. I was simply writing a curriculum teaching the aspects of conflict resolution but not in higher education. For this reason, I had to rewrite the curriculum for my target audience and in order to meet the promises set forth in my proposal. Phase three, the molding of the curriculum and the creation of the workshop, took the curriculum created in the previous phase and molding it into a viable workshop. The goal during this phase was to create a workshop which could be used by other conflict resolution specialists for the same target audience. I wanted to make it translatable and useable for other specialists wanting to provide the same workshop. For this reason, a lot of time and energy was spent in this phase, starting with the creation of the speaker manual. This is where part one of this phase comes in. I molded the curriculum I previously made into a manual for the speaker or presenter. This served two purposes, allowing me the chance to ensure all information was covered adequately and that every aspect tied in together. It was during this phase I gathered and narrowed down the handouts and resources I would use during the workshop. Only the ones which would not detract from the material already being given remained. Once the manual was created, I used it as a guide to create the PowerPoint. Speaker notes were added to the PowerPoint as I went through and practiced the workshop on my own. Evaluation forms were created during this phase, as well, written to gauge the impact the information had and the overall success of the workshop and my presentation. Information packets were also created with handouts, a worksheet, a workbook, and an evaluation sheet. References were not completed until the end of this phase until I was certain what resources were actually used. They were then added to the PowerPoint, speaker manual, and information packets. A website was also created in an attempt to make the workshop more accessible to other colleges and universities. The final phase, the implementation of the workshop, simply consisted of hosting the workshop for the professors. Once it is realized conflict resolution is not only beneficial to the typical organizations, but is translatable to a wide array of organizations, including public education institutions the field of conflict resolution will expand. This workshop being available for colleges and universities alone promotes the field of conflict resolution, allowing it as an option promotes the field and its use. This is why the creation of the website was so important. It expands the potential use of the workshop and conflict resolution in the higher education
