In addition to this example, Brezovnik (2015) conducted an experiment to see the role of integrated art in math performance. Brezovnik divided 210 fifth grade students into a control group and an experimental group. Both groups were taught four new math topics. The experimental group was taught the lessons with art integrated into the subject, while the control group was taught the lesson without art integration. Both groups were then given tests on the topics. The experimental group that was taught math with art integration received much better test scores than students in the control group. Arts education can provide pleasure, motivation, and productivity to students (Brezovnik, 2015). Teaching quantitative classes like math and science alone has less real-world application and becomes less interesting to art-oriented students, but integrating art into the lessons makes math more approachable while maintaining its challenge (Wynn & Harris, 2012). By integrating art into subjects like math, the subject becomes more scintillating and emotional for students, which leads to more motivation to learn (Brezovnik, 2015). Incorporating art into STEM curriculum can help motivate students to continue in STEM fields in the future (Land, 2013). Integrating arts also helps keep students interested in learning science (Bequette & Bequette, 2012). Overall, arts help increase student engagement, involvement, and enthusiasm, which lead to an improved attitude about learning (Duma, 2014). Art allows students to express their identities, experiences, and imagination and gives them the opportunity to explore their own thoughts, viewpoints, voices, and personal goals (Jamison, 2015). Through this, students have a chance to learn more about who they are and to further develop and express their thoughts and beliefs. Including art classes into the curriculum gives students who do not excel in core classes an opportunity to assert their voice and abilities (Wynn & Harris, 2012). Acknowledging and incorporating art into the curriculum can close the gap between these and other students because it gives the more art-oriented students the opportunity to learn by using methods that they excel in (Wynn & Harris, 2012). When the kind of art incorporated in classes is diversified, teachers can further learn which type of art each student understands best and apply that method when teaching other subjects (Brezovnik, 2015). Using different types of art allows students to organize and make sense of the world around them as they continue to explore the emotions and ideas learned through art (Jamison, 2015).
