How do the Arts Affect Student Learning
The arts have stimulated controversy over the years. Research has upheld that the fine arts help improve standardized testing and learning. Arts can access complex parts of the brain to better analyze students surroundings. The arts have been cut from schools throughout the United States and test scores are going down. The arts have been proven to help children with learning disabilities or mental health issues better understand what is being taught to them. Standardized testing has been a factor in proving whether the arts in schools impact testing. In a 2005 research program researchers attested that test-takers that took more than 4 years of the fine arts had an average 58 points higher on the verbal portion of the SAT and 38 points higher for the math portion of the SAT. In research, creativity is the top skill needed to succeed in the 2020’s. Creativity is becoming more important as we progress. The generation needs more thinkers to accomplish greater innovations. Being able to think quickly and create something with great work ethic is needed to accomplish career goals. Art has been proven to open up neurons that release creativity. Being able to think outside the box and have creative ideas can be boosted with art.
Researchers also found that students/adults that had taken several years of the arts had a lower risk of depression and a higher self-esteem. When a person walks on a stage and performs, it gives them confidence. An art project can make a student feel accomplished and it will boost self-esteem.
