Of these systems, internal improvements and indsustrialization had the largest effect on the Northern economy. One of the most important internal improvements was the construction of canals, which made transportation amongst varying cities much easier. Canals carried turnpikes which were beneficiary to the American economy for it collected toll profit. However, contrary to popular belief, canals did not unite the north and the south closer but rather separated them further and led to two unique economies. The North’s economy was dominated by industrialization and factories, and was home to the nation’s new commercial center: New York. Factories created many job opportunities to those who belonged to the middle and lower class and created a working class. Upon many, the Lowell Factory was world-renown for great living conditions and falsely attracted many immigrants prepared for cheap labor. However, the Boston Transcript documented that after working wages had been reduced by fifteen percent, many Lowell workers became outraged and formed a large labor union to demonstrate their concerns. The Lowell Mill Girls influenced other workers to fight for their given rights and demonstrated that women were powerful enough to strike a change against a flawed government. An industrial revolution had taken place in Britain earlier from the years 1760 to 1820. Like America, former agriculutural economies saw the benefits of industries and factories and converted into technological ones. Another notable effect was the living conditions that factories created. More jobs were available in both nations thus creating many opportunities for newcomers. However, many workers also complained of unfair treatmwnt such as exaggeratedly long work shifts and exploitment via low wages. Citizens of America and Britain took advantage of their power as a people and created labor unions, which commanded they went on strike to show refusal of following corrupt company owners. All in all, economic changes such as internal improvements and labor wages led to social and political developments in society that showed that citizens acknowledged their power to make progressive
