Assimilation is the process by which a society experiencing acculturation changes so much that it is hardly distinguishable from a more dominant one. What were you most surprised to learn from the film?
The Native Americans secrecy surprised me to no degree. The way the Indians believed in things and the way the carry themselves so humble captivates me. Seeing this film made me emotional because I had no clue assimilation went on in any country. The way they treated the people saying, “You can kill the Indian, but leave the man" floored me. The native children were taken from the families against their own will and they were taken to boarding schools, where they were physically, sexually and emotionally abused. They had no voice and no one they could turn to they could trust. They had to work in farms, sewing and cooking that children should not have been doing. They were never shown or felt loved and resulted to drugs and alcohol abuse. The new way of life was marked in to the Native American kids’ lives. How did this affect them long term?
They suffered from drugs and abuse, and were never able to unite with their tribes again. The natives felt they didn’t fit into United State like everybody else which made the suicide rates go up. They had no one to turn to help cope with things that had to tolerate and be forced into. Reference:
