What are the four layer of the earth and what are their characteristics? |
Inner core- Hottest layer . A solid ball of compressed metals. Outer core- Liquid layer. Made from nickel and metals. Mantle- Molten rock. Crust- Thinnest layer. Land and ocean |
Land and ocean Molten rock Nickel and metals Solid ball made of compressed metals |
Oceanic and continental plate characteristics |
Oceanic- Newer, thinner and denser. Continental- Older, Thicker and less dense. |
What happens at a destructive plate margin? What can it cause? |
The oceanic plate and the continental plate move towards each other and the oceanic subducts under the continental. Creates volcanoes and small earthquakes. |
What happens at a constructive plate margin? And what does it cause? |
This is when two plates move away from each other, letting the partially melted mantle to rise. Small earthquakes, volcanoes and highlands |
The partially melted mantle rises |
What happens at a conservative plate margin? What does it cause? |
This is when two plates move alongside each other. They can move in the Same or opposite direction. Large earthquakes |
What happens at a collision plate margin? What does it cause? |
This is when two continental plates move towards each other and collide. The surface thickens and lifts into fold mountains. Large earthquakes. |
Have a go at writing an answer for the distribution of volcanoes |
P- Pattern E- Example A- Anomoly |
What are the types of volcanoes and their characteristics? |
Shield- Constructive, Lava only, regular and frequent eruptions. Composite- Destructive, Layers of ash and lava, irregular eruptions |
Have a go at writing an answer for the distrubtion of Earthquake |

P- pattern E- example A- anomoly |
How to earthquakes occur? |
Friction causes the tectonic plates to become stuck. Earthquakes occur when they become free. Energy waves race rapidly from the focus. The point at ground level above the focus is called the epicentre. |
Haiti causes and impacts list 3 of each |
Causes- The focus was 13km below the surface( a shallow focus). Located at a conservative plate margin Aftershocks of up to 5.9m. Impacts- About 220,000 people were killed. About 1.5 million were left homeless. Government buildings and the cathedral were destroyed |
Haiti responses list 3 |
$100 billion of aid was donated Better healthcare facilities Crop trials Micro credit schemes Better employment Better quality housing |
Haiti long term problems- list 3 |
More people to live under poverty line People still live in temporary camps Business failure |
What is the M and 3 P's? Give an example for each. |
Mitigation- Any caution taken to reduce the impact of a hazard. Earthquake drills Protection- Trying to protect yourself from any of the effects of a hazard. Earthquake proof buildings Preparation- people need to know what to do when a natural hazard occurs. Loud sirens to warn people. Prediction- An educated guess based on previous events. Animals evacuating |
