Color |
The effect on our eyes of different wavelengths or frequencies of an electromagnetic spectrum that is infinite and continuous. Color consists of hue, intensity, and value. |
Color Spectrum |
The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye. |
Spectral Colors |
Colors that become visible when white light passes through a prism: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. |
Subtractive Color Process |
The mixing of pigments and dyes so that all colors of light except the desired color are absorbed (subtracted). |
Primary Colors |
In a color system, the basic colors that cannot be broken down into other colors and that can be combines to create other colors. |
Secondary Colors |
The colors created from mixing two primary colors. |
Additive Color Process |
The mixing of colored lights so that when some colored lights shine on a surface, they combine (add) to make other colors. |
Optical Color Mixing |
Placement of different colors in such a way that the human eye mixes them to form new colors. |
Color Wheel |
A circular arrangement of the colors of the visible spectrum. |
Hue |
A name of a color family or an area on the color spectrum. |
Value (of Color) |
The degree of lightness or darkness in a color. |
Value Scale |
A series of progressively changing values from light to dark or dark to light. |
Key |
Used synonymously with value. In a scale of values, high-key colors are lighter than colors in the middle of the scale; low-key colors are darker than colors in the middle of the scale. |
Intensity, Saturation, Chroma |
The strength or weakness of a color. |
Tint |
A color that has white added to it. |
Shade |
A color that has black added to it. |
Tone |
A color that has gray added to it. |
Neutrals |
Blacks, whites, grays made from mixing black and white. In some media, earth tones are also considered to be neutrals. |
Pigments |
Ground-up color materials, such as powdered minerals, that are suspended in a medium such as oil or acrylic to make paint. |
Dye |
An intensely colored compound that dissolves in a medium (usually water) and is absorbed by the material it touches. |
Opaque |
Impenetrable to light; preventing underlying images and colors from showing through, or the illusion of this phenomenon. |
Transparent |
Able to transmit light and underlying colors and images, or the illusion of this phenomenon. |
Tertiary Colors, Intermediates |
The products of mixing a primary and a secondary color. |
Monochromatic Color Scheme |
Variations in color based on one color. |
Analogous Color Scheme |
Variations in color based on colors adjacent to one another on the color wheel. |
Complementary Color Scheme |
Variations in color based on colors opposite each other on the color wheel. |
Triad |
Three colors that are equidistant from one another (form an equilateral triangle) on the color wheel. |
Tetrad |
Four colors that are equidistant from one another (form a square or rectangle) on the color whell. |
Hexad |
Six colors obtained by choosing every other color on the color wheel. |
Chromatic Gray |
A neutral gray produced by mixing complementary colors in order to change intensity and value. |
Polychromatic |
Many different colors in one composition. |
Simultaneous Contrast |
An effect achieved by placing highly contrasting colors, values, and intensities next to each other; the contrast between colors increases when they are placed next to each other. |
Afterimage |
An image that appears after looking away from a strong stimulus, such as seeing a halo after looking at a bright light. |
Local Color |
