Boyle's Law |
the pressure exerted by a gas held at a constant temperature varies INVERSELY with the volume of the gas. If the volume is halved, the pressure is doubled; if the volume is doubled, the pressure is halved. 1662, Robert Boyle |
Charle's Law |
With pressure constant, the VOLUME of a gas will increase as the TEMPERATURE increases.
Henry's Law |
Solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas above the liquid. [carbontd drink, DCS of divers] At a constant temp, the amount of a given gas that dissolves in a given type and volume of liquid is directly proportional to the Partial Pressure of that gas in equilibrium with that liquid. |
Dalton's Law |
total pressure of a gas in a container is the sum of the partial pressure of the individual gases in the container. Determined by % or fraction of gas in breathing mix, depth-ambient pressure, he breathes the gas Extremely high concentration of O2=oxygen toxicity, very high concent of Nitrogen=narcosis |

Oxygen Toxicity
metabolism of oxygen and collisions between oxygen molecules in the cells creates a small number of oxygen “free radicals” causing major damage or kill cells. Cells normally inactivate free radicals as soon as formed but when a high concentrations of oxygen is breathed free radicals build up in the cells more quickly than they can be eliminated. |

pulmonary barotrauma
refers to a pressure-related injury. Pulmonary (lung) barotrauma is known by many names such as lung over-expansion burst lungs and exploded lungs. While these names make the condition seem catastrophic, pulmonary barotrauma frequently happens on a nearly microscopic level. At depth, air is caught in the tiny air sacs (called alveoli) where gas exchange takes place in a diver's lungs. These air sacs are made of extremely thin and fragile tissue. If air is trapped in the sacs as a diver ascends, it will expand from the change in pressure and burst the sacs like many tiny balloons. This air escapes from the lungs, and causes various types of damage depending upon where it travels. |

Dalton's law & breathing @ depth |
Gases stay in same proportion under pressure, body will absorb same proportions of gases regard regardless of depth; est gas levels, plan repetitive dives, avoid bends. |
