2.1.8.42 This muscle originates on the lower part of the mandible. It pulls down the angle of the mouth.
depressor anguli oris
(Names: depressor=depress, anguli=angle, oris=mouth). |
Muscles Used for Facial Expression and Mastication
These muscles are primarily used for facial expression and mastication. (Mastication is the process of chewing food in preparation for swallowing and digestion.) There are a few additional muscles which are found deeper in the face which could not be seen on the previous figure, "Muscles of the Face." These muscles will be listed here, along with a brief description. |
2.2.8.42 This muscle also originates on the mandible and inserts on to the orbicularis muscle. It depresses the bottom lip.
depressor labii inferioris
(Names: depressor=depress, labii=lips, inferioris=below or bottom). |
2.3.8.42 This is a muscle of mastication. It originates on the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone. It moves the mandible and limits sideways jaw movement.
lateral pterygoid
These muscles are primarily used for facial expression and mastication. (Mastication is the process of chewing food in preparation for swallowing and digestion.) There are a few additional muscles which are found deeper in the face which could not be seen on the previous figure, "Muscles of the Face." These muscles will be listed here, along with a brief description.
2.4.8.42 Also a muscle of mastication. Both pterygoid muscles are on the inside of the mandible. The medial pterygoid elevates the jaw and provides sideways jaw movement.
medial pterygoid
These muscles are primarily used for facial expression and mastication. (Mastication is the process of chewing food in preparation for swallowing and digestion.) There are a few additional muscles which are found deeper in the face which could not be seen on the previous figure, "Muscles of the Face." These muscles will be listed here, along with a brief description.
2.5.8.42 The mentalis muscle originates on the chin and goes into the orbicularis oris muscle. It elevates and protrudes the lower lip. Basically it allows for pouting.
mentalis
These muscles are primarily used for facial expression and mastication. (Mastication is the process of chewing food in preparation for swallowing and digestion.) There are a few additional muscles which are found deeper in the face which could not be seen on the previous figure, "Muscles of the Face." These muscles will be listed here, along with a brief description.
2.6.8.42 The occipitalis muscle covers the occipital region of the skull.
occipitalis
These muscles are primarily used for facial expression and mastication. (Mastication is the process of chewing food in preparation for swallowing and digestion.) There are a few additional muscles which are found deeper in the face which could not be seen on the previous figure, "Muscles of the Face." These muscles will be listed here, along with a brief description.
2.7.8.42 The risorius originates on the side of the face and inserts on the orbicularis oris muscle. It draws the angle of the mouth laterally (to the side), and enables the human being to smile.
risorius
These muscles are primarily used for facial expression and mastication. (Mastication is the process of chewing food in preparation for swallowing and digestion.) There are a few additional muscles which are found deeper in the face which could not be seen on the previous figure, "Muscles of the Face." These muscles will be listed here, along with a brief description.
2.8.8.42 This muscle extends from the upper three cervical vertebrae all the way to the temporal and occipital bones. It extends and rotates the head.
splenius capitis
These muscles are primarily used for facial expression and mastication. (Mastication is the process of chewing food in preparation for swallowing and digestion.) There are a few additional muscles which are found deeper in the face which could not be seen on the previous figure, "Muscles of the Face." These muscles will be listed here, along with a brief description.
