What are the most abundant gases in the atmosphere? |
1- Nitrogen 2- Oxygen 3- Argon |
What is the triatomic form of oxygen? |
Ozone(O3). |
What function does ozone have in the atmosphere and where is it located? |
It protects everything on earth from ultraviolet(UV) rays coming from the sun. It is located approx 20-30km above earth, below stratosphere. |
What layer of the atmosphere do we live in? |
The troposphere (this is also where clouds/storms occur). |
What is the greenhouse effect? |
The trapping of the suns warmth in the planets lower atmosphere. |
How does earth recieve energy from the sun? |
Nuclear fusions in the suns core emits electromagnetic radiation(in forms of light) which is the energy that heats up the Earth. |
What are the two most important heat absorbing gases in the atmosphere? |
Water vapor and carbon dioxide. |
How would a steep pressure gradient be depicted on a weather map? |
The isobars/contours would be closely spaced. |
What is albedo? |
Proportion of light/radiation that id reflected by a surface. |
What is the difference in heating of land and water? |
Land heats up faster. |
What is orographic lifting? |
When a air mass is forced up by a mountain and is cooled(which raises humidity). This can create clouds. |
What is transpiration? |
When plants release water vapors. |
What is the gradient of a river? |
Ratio of drop in elevation vs steepness of a river. |
What is the single most erosional agent? |
Water. |
What is the hydrologic cycle? |
Continuous movement of water. Condensation->precipitation->evaporation or transpiration->condensation. |
What is a aquifer? |
A body of rocks which can contain ground water. |
What are stalagtites and stalagmites |
Stalagtites: ceiling Stalagmites- floor |
What is porosity? |
Measure of void spaces in materials. |
How does a glacier modify the valley it moves through? |
Straightens, deepens, and widens it. |
What forms desert pavement? |
Gradual removal of fine-grained material by wind/rain, leaving larger fragments behind. |
What is the coriolis effect? |
Northern Hemisphere: objects move countet clockwise Southern Hemisphere: objects more clockwise. |
What type of ocean water has highest density? |
Cold and salty. |
What kind of current moves toward the poles? |
Warm currents. |
What does soil consist of? |
Minerals, air, water, organic material. |
