CIRCLE |
A circle is the set of all points equidistant from a center point (Formal definition) It is 360 degrees around a circle! The center is NOT on the circle! |
Radius of a circle |
The radius of a circle is the segment connecting the center of the circle to any point on the circle. Radius is the same everywhere in the circle |
Diameter of a circle |
The diameter of a circle is a segment going through the center with endpoints on the circle (it is always double the radius and visa versa) 2r=d...and d/2=r |
Chord of a circle |
A chord of a circle is a segment with endpoints on the circle. (a diameter IS a chord that goes through the center) |
Tangent to a circle |
A tangent to a circle is a line, segment, or ray that just "touches" the circle at one and ONLY one point. The tangent line NEVER enters the interior of the circle |
Secant of a circle |
A secant is similar to a chord. It is a line that intersects the circle in 2 places (these intersections form the resulting chord) |
Central angle of a circle |
An angle whose VERTEX is the center of the circle |
ARC of a circle (measured in degrees) |
Arcs are formed by a central angle on the circle itself. The measure's of these in degrees are congruent. arc AB is a minor(smaller) arc.; arc ADB is a major (bigger) arc |
Arc LENGTH |
Arc length is DISTANCE along an arc. IT IS NOT THE SAME AS THE ARC MEASURE! |
how to find ARC LENGTH |
Use the central angle measure to find the "percent" of the total circle you are trying to find. |
Sector of a circle |
its just the area of a slice of pizza!! |
Find the area of a SECTOR of a circle |
again we will use the central angle to find the "percent" of the circle, then multiply it by the total area |
