Metabolism |
An emergent property of life that arises from orderly interaction between molecules. The totality of an organisms chemical reaction. |
Catabolic |
Breaks down pathways. Processes that occur when a metabolic pathway releases energy, thereby breaking down complex molecules to simpler compounds. |
Entropy |
A measurement of disorder and randomness |
Thermodynamics |
The study of the energy transformations that occur in a collection of matter. |
Endergonic Reaction |
Absorbs free energy from its surroundings, which makes is positive. Reactions are non-spontaneous. Magnitude is the quantity of energy required to drive the reaction. |
Energy coupling |
A key feature in the way that cells manage their energy resources. Acts as the immediate source of energy that powers cellular work. ATP is responsible for the mediation of most coupling cells. |
Enzyme |
A macromolecule that acts as a catalyst. |
Catalyst |
A chemical agent that speeds up a reaction whithout being consumed by the reaction. |
Active Site |
A pocket or groove on an enzyme where catalysis occurs.
Feedback inhibition |
A mode of metabolic control. Occurs when ATP allosterically inhibits an enzyme in an ATP-generating pathway. The metabolic pathway is switched off by the inhibitory binding of its end product to an enzyme that acts early in the pathway. |
