Origin of Replication |
A particular sequence in a genome at which replication is initiated. |
Replication Fork |
The leading strand of DNA is the strand being synthesized in the same direction as the growing replication fork. |
What is helicase? |
The enzyme that is responsible for seperating double-stranded DNA into single strands allowing for replication |
What is DNA primase? |
DNA primase is an enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of a short RNA (or DNA in some organisms) segment called the primer complementary to ssDNA template |
RNA Primer |
Serves as a starting point for DNA synthesis |
DNA polymerase |
Enzymes that synthesize DNA molecules from deoxyribonucleotides |
Leading Strand |
Continuously replicated in the 3' to 5' direction |
Lagging Strand |
Discontinuously replicated in short sections |
Okazaki Fragments |
Short, newly synthesized DNA fragments that are formed in the lagging strand during DNA replication. |
DNA Ligase |
Enzyme that connects (ligates) the Okazaki fragments onto the (now continuous) newly synthesized complementary strand. |
Mitosis |
A type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus. |
Sister Chromatids |
Either of the two identical copies (chromatids) formed by the replication of a single chromosome. 1/2 of the duplicated chromosome. |
Centromere |
The region of a chromosome to which the microtubules of the spindle attach during cell division. |
Cohesin |
Protein complex that regulates the separation of sister chromatids during cell division. |
Seperase |
Cysteine protease responsible for triggering Anaphase by hydrolysing cohesion |
Centrosomes |
An organelle near the nucleus that contains the centrioles from which the spindle fibers develop in cell division |
Mitotic Spindle |
The Macromolecular machine that segregates the two daughter cells Major structural elements are the microtubule polymers |
Kinetochore |
Complex of proteins associated with the centromere of the chromosome during cell division |
