Uni-valving or bi-valving a cast |
Bivalving a cast involves cutting the cast down on both sides as if you were taking it off and univalving a cast involves cutting down one side of the cast. This is used when there is post injury swelling to prevent ischemia |
Serial casting |
Used to correct joint position and improve mobility. This cast is changed at specific intervals to slowly induce a change in the joint position |
Delbert cast |
Short leg cast that prevents lateral movement while allowing Dorsiflexion and plantar flexion |
Dehne cast |
Three finger spica cast. Used to treat fractures of the navicular. It is comprised of a section covering the thumb and a separate section and closing the index and middle finger |
Gauntlet cast |
Used to treat fractures or dislocations of the metacarpals and phalanges |
Dorsal blocking cast |
Used on the dorsal side of the wrist or hand for the purpose of limiting extension. Useful in patients who have had a surgical repair of the flexor tendons of the wrist or fingers as it will prevent passive and active extension |
Baseball splint |
Pre-fabricated splint which is used to stabilize fractures of the distal phalanx. It is applied to the volar side of the hand and forearm and it positions the hand in such a way that it looks like a baseball is being held in the hand |
Airplane splint |
Hold the arm in a position of abduction at shoulder level. The forearm is in flexion and a strut is used for support |
Coaptation splint |
Consists of two pads of plaster placed on either side of an extremity, and held in place by addressing |
Velpeau dressing/splint |
Designed to treat injuries to the shoulder and humerus. Are used when the fracture is minimally displaced or non-displaced. The elbow is held at the side in a flexed position and the hand is affixed to the upper chest. The angulation of the fracture can be controlled by pads under axilla |
AFO (ankle foot orthosis) |
Used to prevent plantar flexion. Starts at the proximal calf and continues along the plantar surface of the foot. The device is useful in the treatment of dropfoot. |
