Key themes- Responsibility for others |
Scrooge doesn’t believe in giving money to ‘idle people’. Dickens is trying to show how absurd Malthus’ views are “Had better do so and reduce the surplus population” “Are there no prisons?” |
|
Key theme: Greed |
Dickens tells reader how greed will lead to unhappiness. Scrooge has changed from young energetic boy at Fezziwigs party, he is no longer the boy Belle fell in love with. Scrooge wanted to prosper for both of them, but his nobler aspirations are gone, leaving gain. Suggests financial wealth leads to poverty of love and emotion. Contrast between Belles family and Scrooge shows how love of money can destroy human life. |
