Basic income is this idea of giving everyone money regardless if you are rich or poor, everyone would get this money. “Basic income is a right, a right as a citizen of your country”(Rutger Bregman, 2014 para. 11). You do not have to apply for it, sign for it, or have any requirments. It something that is just given to you with no strings attached, you may spend it how you like. This can impact the socity both positively and negatively. The positive outcomes of a basic income is the crime rate would decrease, less individuals would feel the need to steal because they are getting this basic income to provide them with food and other opportunities to help them get life necessities like health care. The negative aspect of a basic income is that some individuals are going to stop working because they are being handed money instead of working for it. In the Ted Talk, Rutger Bregman states that people are not going to stop working because they have goals, they have ambitions “when you give people free money, they will stop working”(2014, para.31). With the rate of the amount of people in poverty decreases, the percentage of crime rate will decrease as well. With basic income, the household would get enough money for life necessities like food and water. Majority people who commit a crime are often desperate, but with the basic income enforced, individuals would not feel the need to commit a crime because they would be able to afford the the necessity. A basic income would increase the number of people that would be off the streets, giving these individuals with a positive environment. The Author describes this idea of removing poverty as a utopia because it is impossible to completely remove poverty.
