However, this organization requires help from volunteers and neighbors to make their project successful. According to this article, the reason why existence of poverty is not accepted by most American is due to the fact they uphold a stereotypical image about what poverty looks like. If the images shown do not portray a shabby shelter along with emaciated children and family, then the guidelines for poverty have not been met, and it is further impossible for Americans to think that they can can have homes which do not follow the stereotypical image. The organization uses these methods to get people to donate for them. However, the idea that isn’t accepted is those who can barely live from one paycheck to another, or cannot get a high paying source of income. As the author mentions that Habitat for Humanity uses stereotype images for poverty for its publicity videos (page 2, line 27) due to the fact it fits into people’s perception of poverty which will lead them to sympathize and donate to their organization. As a reader, this particular point that the author addresses is quite accurate. Most people in America are hardwired, or even taught to a certain extent, to see and view the conditions in Africa in the poverty “criteria,” but however, if those images are shown and told that it exist in America we regard as a lack of hard work and laziness. What people don’t remember or consider that America has a diverse and myriad amount of people that has come from different places and background. Most of them come here to seek a better life but lack the connection or facilities to set them on the right track so they can achieve what they came here for. As the author mentions, this topic needs to be addressed to the public and brought to their awareness. Poverty is a complex ideology which people view it as a black and white concept.
