The brain of an individual is responsible for controlling his or her emotions. The following regions or areas of the brain play a significant role when it comes to depression-amygdala, the thalamus and the hippocampus. Various researches such as the fMRI study, which was published in the Journal of Neuroscience investigating 24 women who had been diagnosed with depression, showed that the hippocampus was relatively smaller for people who had depression. In this study, it showed that the hippocampus of depressed women was approximately 9% to 13% smaller than for women who were not depressed. The researchers suggested that the relatively low or slow production of new neurons due to the size of the hippocampus leads to low moods and if there are no interventions such as the use of antidepressants, it can lead to MDE.
