Whereas, the previous plays that we have read, I have had to read the written version and watch the play to get a grasp on what was going on. However, with this play, I was able to understand the concepts with just watching the play. I believe that this play was easier to understand due to the more modern language and realistic setting rather than the abstract world the other plays have been in. I think the director did a great job with displaying the social standards between women and men in this play. Overall, I think this play was my favorite play that we have had to do an analysis over due to the fact that the theme relates to modern day in some …show more content…
Furthermore, both setting and costume designs allowed me to further understand what was happening in the play making it easier to understand the main concepts of the play. When discussing costumes designs, I think the costume designer did a wonderful job. For example, Mrs. Helmer was always dressed in a very conservative manner, all of the costumes exposed very little skin. For this reason, I was able to make the connection that exposing skin, such as shoulders, was very “unlady like”. This observation also allowed me to make the connection of the particular time period that this play was set it, that concededly played a role into setting. The house designed to represent the late 1800’s with the wooden plank walls, doilies, and antiques that scatter the rooms, bookcases, and much more. To add onto the setting, the light fixtures were very little used. A lot of the lighting elements that the director used was more natural, such as, fires, candles, and natural window lighting. I believe that all of these design elements that were joined together allowed audience members, like me, to get a deeper connection and background context of the play better than the previous
