Abortions became legal in the United States of America during a notorious 1973 Supreme Court ruling known as the Roe v Wade case. Mrs. Jane Roe (P), a pregnant single woman, presented a class action suit demanding the constitutionality of the abortion laws in the state of Texas. These laws made it a crime to receive or even attempt an abortion except when medically advised by a doctor to save the life of the mother. Abortions result in approximately seventy thousand maternal deaths and five million hospital admittances per year, worldwide with slightly under half of those abortions performed unsafely. An abortion can also occur unexpectedly, in which case it is called a miscarriage. Miscarriages are the loss of a baby and happen before the twentieth week of pregnancy. According to the March of Dimes, about ten to fifteen out of one hundred recognized pregnancies (ten to fifteen percent) end in miscarriage.
