In the story, the way Miss Brill is portrayed almost makes one feel sorry for her because of how lonely she is. She mentions that she loves going to the pier every Sunday to sit on her bench and watch people. She listens to others’ conversations and tries putting herself into their shoes, but never does she actually engage herself in conversation with them. Miss Brill is very happy she decides to wear her fur because it boosts her self confidence. The fox fur can be a representation of Miss Brill herself, only comes out on Sundays otherwise kept in its box. Miss Brill puts makeup on to add color and life to her skin and also another way of helping her self-worth. Miss Brill never engages in conversation while people watching because she’s afraid of being vulnerable and letting others give her a reason to be emotionally insecure. When Miss Brill over hears a young couple’s conversation , it interests her so she continues listens, only to find them making fun of her and her fur. This couple sends her running home, showing that their words really put a dent in her self esteem as she was so caught up worrying about it that she even forgets her traditional Sunday honey cake.
