This poem is about two African american sisters that live their adult lives in two different ways, Sadie lives life in adventurous way and doesn 't follow all the rules and Maude follows every rule in society. Gwendolyn Brooks shows the result of the girls ' actions based on the way they view life, When Sadie said her last so-long Her girls struck out from home. (Sadie left as heritage Her fine-toothed comb.) Maud, who went to college, Is a thin brown mouse. She is living all alone In this old house..(lines 13-20) The author states that in the end, Sadie lived a life of fulfillment and adventure so she experienced true fulfillment as for Maude she end up living a life in her comfort zone and end up feeling empty inside. The poem reflects on how sometimes it is better to live a more meaningful life and go against society and experience adventure. Sadie may have seemed to be going against society at first and behaving in a way that her parents and society doesn’t want her to act, but she ends up having a nice life with two well off daughters. As for Maude she went to college and followed what society wanted her to do, but lived alone with no meaning. This is highly reflected on two pieces of literature New York Times Article, “A Private Dance? Four Million Web Fans Say No” written by Charles Mcgrath and the poem “Sadie and Maud” written by Gwendolyn Brooks.
