In a totalitarian state, a one-party dictatorship, in this case, communists, attempt to regulate the lives of its citizens. Stalin ruled over Russia with terror and brutality, forcing his people to bend to his will or be punished. He forced a policy of Russification, promoting Russian language, history, and culture. Russia also became a command economy through Stalin, in which the government makes all the economic based decisions. In 1928 Stalin set in place the first of his five-year plans, a plan to build industry and increase the production of farms. This resulted in a growth of industry and economy. As dictator of Russia, Stalin forced peasants into many troublesome situations, like having collectives, which were large farms owned by the government that peasants worked on. The goal was to grow enough food for the urban workers and then export the surplus. The profit made from the surplus would aid in Stalin’s plan of industrialization. In many ways, Lenin and Stalin were successful in solving the problems that caused the revolution. They were able to end most of the nationalism among minor ethnicities through extreme Russification, forcing one culture upon everyone.
