Erik Erikson developed the psychosocial stages. He explained and came up with the Identity versus Identity confusion stage. This stage states that “Erikson’s fifth stage of psychosocial development, in which an adolescent seeks to develop a coherent sense of self, including the role she or he is to play in society.” (Papilia and Feldman, 2013: 390) Here Erikson described the adolescence stage, ages varying from 12 years to 18 years; this is the shift from childhood to adulthood.

This stage states that young adults either form strong, long-lasting bonds with friends and romantic partners or face possible sense of isolation and self absorption (Papilia and Feldman, 2012: 457). So it is evident that at this stage we want to find more meaning to life in a sense, to find someone to love than more than just a friend. At this stage we start to share ourselves more intimately with others. We want to find new relationships for long-term commitments with other people other than a family member (www.simplypsychology.org). “Our emotional and psychological well-being is often tied to how successful we are at forming these relationships.” (www.study.com).We build new relationships with people around us and sometimes it can be difficult because of many different things that affect our lives, such as work, school or family or friends. We have to learn to control our emotions better and we learn to express ourselves appropriately in different situations.
In early adulthood, the ages are between 20 and 35. The physical development in this stage is the least vivid. Only a bit of weight and height may be added. Hormonal changes also do occur but it’s less than it was during adolescence (www.study.com). Developing one’s own intimate relationships can experience a few challenges. At this stage one has to understand ourselves and our identities will develop in who we want to be.
