● 1 Thermometer
● 1 Digital Timer
● Gas pressure sensor
● Logger Pro
● Vernier computer interface
● Laptop computer
● 2 Ring stands
● 2 utility clamps
● 3 400 ml Glass beakers
● 1 Small plastic shoe container
● 6 Sprigs of Elodea
● 1 Hot plate
● 1 Small plastic pan
● Ice to fill the pan
● DI Water
Method
First, turn the hot plate on to start the heating process, careful not to touch it after it is on. Power on the computer and connect the gas pressure sensor to the interface (Lab Quest).
Start the Logger Pro data collection software, if it is not already running, and choose New from the File menu. The software will identify the sensor and load a default data-collection setup. Now the system is ready to start …show more content…
Do not touch the side or bottom of the beaker with the thermometer, this will result in an inaccurate temperature reading. Record the starting temperature in the corresponding area of the data table.
Leave the thermometer in the water. Carefully place a sprig of the Elodea plant into the beaker of water. Secure the gas pressure sensor to the second ring stand with a utility clamp, and lower the sensor into the opposite side of the beaker. Again, just like the thermometer, do not touch the side or bottom of the beaker with the sensor. Place the plastic shoe container over the beaker and ring stands, careful not to come in contact with them. This will prevent any outside factors that may alter the temperature of the water. Set the digital timer for 15 minutes and press start. At the 5 minute mark record the current temperature in the appropriate area of the data table.
Temperature readings will also need to be recorded at the 10 and 15 minute marks. Once the 15 minute mark is reached, record the data collected from the gas pressure sensor, reset the program for the nest test, and remove the plastic cover. Thoroughly wipe off the gas pressure sensor …show more content…
The contents of the beaker and Elodea plant can be disposed of accordingly. Now, take the second beaker, labeled
“Warm” and fill it to the 300 ml mark with DI water. Lower the thermometer into the beaker of water to obtain a starting temperature. Once the temperature is recorded remove
