I. INTRODUCTION
This report presents an experiment of trying to figure out what different variables make cut flowers survive longer. In this experiment I will be taking cut flowers and placing them into different plastic cups with different objects inside the cups. The objects are aspirin, a penny, and normal tap water. I know that putting a penny in the water causes oxygen to flow through the water into the flower. I also know that putting aspirin in the water it will help close the tips of the flowers and won't let bacteria get inside of the stem and kill the flower. Next, cut then smash the tips of each flower stem. Then, place all nine of them into plastic cups with 13.3 oz (1 ⅔ c ) of water. Once the flowers were in the cups arrange the cups so that each flower got the same amount of sunlight. Then, separate the cups into three groups of three each labeled with what was in the water. After that, drop a penny into three of the cups and an aspirin into three. The last three cups were filled with plain tap water. Next, measure all of the plants with a ruler. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS
My hypothesis that a penny would keep flowers living longer and healthier was supported. It was supported because the flowers with a penny in the water lost the least amount of height during the week and did not brown as fast as the others. I got these results because by putting a penny in the water it oxygenates the water and lets oxygen circulate throughout the flower. Also, a penny is an antibacterial agent and won't let bacteria get into the flower and kill it. The principles of biology that explained this is that antibacterial agents keep the flower from letting bacteria kill it. Some errors were that the temperature in the environment the flowers were in changed multiple times during the experiment. Another error could have been that one of the cups spilled and may have caused bacteria to get onto the flower and made the water amount change.
The significance of my work is that if a person's flowers kept dying fast it could be an answer to their problem and could help keep their flowers longer and better looking. People, like florists, would care about this experiment because if a flower dies they would be losing possible profits they could make off of those flowers. The impact these results could have are that people in homes, weddings, funeral homes, and floral departments could all have longer lasting and healthier looking
