In writing, there are various ways for one to organize and state their paper through numerous systems or framework. One system, initially used by ancient Greek and Roman, is the classical system. The classical system consists of the introduction, background, lines of arguments, alternative argument, and the conclusion. Another system that one can use to help organize their essay is the Toulmin system. This system includes an arguable statement, a qualify of the claim, supporting reasons, an explanation, additional evidence, counterarguments, and a conclusion. Both systems provide the necessary framework for a strong argumentative essay, but they differ in various ways. In the classical system, an introduction to the topic is provided, but instead a claim is provided in the Toulmin system. In the classical system, it provides the necessary background information and then proceeds to support their thesis through lines of arguments. In the Toulmin system, data is presented followed by an explanation for any controversial assumptions. Next, the Toulmin system provides additional evidence to support their claim. Both the classical and Toulmin system present counter arguments, but in different ways.
