Christophers family is very much broken, his mother left him and his father when he was young. Leaving Christopher's father to raise him. Instead of explaining to Christopher that his mother had left them he told Christopher that his mother had died. Later when Christopher found letters from his mother addressed to him he learns the truth, that his mother left him and was not dead.
