In the novels we have read this year, The Outsiders and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, both main characters narrate and tell of their experiences and circumstances they have faced. The protagonists from each novel, Ponyboy Curtis and Christopher Boone, share many similarities but also have several differences shown throughout the books. In both novels, the main character was a teenage boy who had to face many obstacles throughout his life. Christopher’s autism is a constant struggle he has to face daily. Ponyboy is judged for the way he appears and the community he lives in. Each character felt as if they didn’t belong. They both have to find their own ways to overcome their problems.

He is introduced in the book as motherless but the readers later find out that she is alive and well. Christopher has a complicated relationship with his dad after Wellington, the neighbors dog, was killed by him. He also struggles to trust him after he finds out about his mother is alive, and that his father had kept that from him. He leaves his father to live with his mother after those incidents. By the end of the story Christopher becomes self-reliant and believes that he could do anything if he was able to overcome all the obstacles thrown at him throughout his life.
