“Young athletes report that their own values are strongly correlated with their perception of their parents' attitudes” (Richard 8). Parents can either damage the child’s overall being, or can help them overcome obstacles which will lead them to their success. “This research showed that positive support by parents was significantly related to their child’s motivation and enjoyment of sport (Richard 5).” Parents with positive enforcement on a child will greatly improve their child’s game play and overall enjoyment of the sport (Richard 56). The child will be motivated to always do good because the parents always put positive support onto him/her. “The results indicated that children of supportive parents accumulated more minutes of vigorous physical activity than those of uninvolved parents (Richard 5).” By parents being more supportive and encouraging toward their child, their child is motivated to go do more and try their best at it. Parents seem to set an extreme limit that most children can not reach, this causes emotional damage to them and will then be likely to decrease the amount of enjoyment the have in that sport (Kinet 25). Parents need to learn how to be supportive, a motivator, and an actual parent towards the kid without putting their child down. “Supportive and encouraging parents who do not overly pressure their child to participate will provide the best environment for their child to enjoy sports participation (Richards 11).” Parents need to focus on the their child’s great plays, skills, and attitude during the sport. Parents do not need to rant on what they had messed up on, this will cause self doubt and the child will likely just continue to fail without the right motivation (Baldwin 2). Parents with impossible standards will put down the child’s enjoyment of the sport because the child will not be able to reach that standard, parents need to be supportive of their child instead of telling their child and commenting on where the parent thinks they should be
