Grendel’s mother killed one of the King’s most trusted advisors before she sneaks away back to the swamp. So, to avenge the death of Aeschere, Beowulf goes to the murky swamp and swims down to the Mother’s lair where they battle. Beowulf kills the Mother with a sword and then, after finding Grendel’s corpse decapitates it’s head and brings it back for the King. Unlike the first battle, the second occurred from the Mother’s determination for revenge. Grendel attacked the King and his men for no real reason other than because it was his nature.
