There are many differences and similarities in the battles of Beowulf. He prepared for each battle differently.Each battle called for different strategies and levels of preparedness for Beowulf, both mentally and physically. While the outcome of the battles were similar each tested Beowulf’s strength and honor. In the first battle of the book, we find Beowulf battling the monster Grendel. Beowulf hears that the Danes are being troubled by Grendel, so as a warrior in his prime, he travels from Geatland to help them. A thief has taken a goblet from a pile of treasure being guarded by a great dragon.By doing so, the thief woke the dragon and set him on a rampage.When Beowulf heard the news of the dragon he knew he had to go back into battle.Being of old age, Beowulf realized that he needed to bring armor to this fight.He brought his sword, and a giant shield, as well as armor to protect his fragile body.He tries to rally men to physically prepare for this fight.He gains support from only one of his men, Wiglaf.Knowing that this is most likely his last fight, Beowulf is willing to give this fight everything he has. He makes contact with the dragon and the battle begins.Beowulf uses his shield to block the flames from the 50 foot serpent like beast.While attacking, his sword fails him and breaks.Beowulf then takes out a regular dirk and uses that to fend off the dragon.He then deals a fatal blow to the dragon, but gets killed in the process.He leaves the kingdom safe and monster
