My experience of belonging has been sheltered somewhat. Growing up in rural communities with two parents who homeschooled me, my dad having a secure job and my mom staying at home, I have not had the common experiences of neglect and dysfunction. In middle school my family moved twice in the course of thirteen months. This was extremely uncomfortable to me because my need of belonging was interrupted. As I moved to a new community I had to create completely new friendships. This was a valuable learning experience. Because of these moves, my ideas of belonging have shifted. I used to think that my friends were very special and they are, but I thought they were special exclusively, that there was no one else in the world like them, kind and considerate Christians. In my experiences traveling around the United States and to Malaysia and Singapore, I have found wonderful Bible-believing brothers and sisters. One day, the circus members went swimming together. Will was left on the beach seemingly ignored by the others. He calls out, but no one answers.
