I want to be able to take care of myself financially and be a successful independent adult. I have great supportive parents that have been there for me and helped me with anything they could growing up but now that I have graduated high school and I am an adult it’s time for me to grow up and be on my own. I would like to move out of my parents’ house and buy my own home; I also would like to have a family be able to support them. On top of all of that I have a big heart and I want to contribute to this world and help others, one of my most important goals for my life is to save other people’s lives. I have always known I was going to have a career in the medical field because of my motivation and desire to help others. After finding out about a career in Respiratory Therapy and Concorde as a school for getting a degree in the field, it motivated me even more because it made me realize how real my goals are and how close I am to having the future I have always dreamed of.
Generally what motivates me is the need to reach my goals and be successful. I want to be the best person I can for god, for myself, for this world, and for others around me. There are three key needs that are both natural and universal, these are the needs for competence, connectedness and autonomy. Competence is a persons need to do something successfully and learn different things. Connectedness is a persons need to feel connected to others by a sense of belonging and attachment to others. Autonomy is a persons need to feel control over their behavior and goals (Cherry, 2016). For example, self-determination describes why people are motivated to grow and change, they feel the need to be competent, connected, and in control of their behavior and goals. Self-determination motivation helps a person to be motivated to be better, to grow as an individual.
In Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs I believe I fall in the category of belonging and love needs. I feel I have all my Physiological needs, safety needs, and belonging and love needs met but I am working towards achieving the next level of esteem needs.
