This is talking about how Wilson detained anybody who opposed the war at the time, and comparing it to Lincoln. If it wasn’t for Lincoln, then this most likely wouldn’t have been happened. Lincoln set the stage for things like this to happen when he banned the Habeas Corpus, which gives people the right to be brought before a court. Overall Wilson wouldn’t have done this if it wasn’t for Lincoln. Along with discussing Wilson actions, they also discussed Roosevelt's, which was that he placed Japanese people in camps during WWII after the Pearl Harbor attacks. In the article it says, “Roosevelt was responsible for the most egregious incursions on civil liberties” (Weber Was Lincoln a Tyrant?). During this period Lincoln enacted martial law which in turn removed power of previous branches on the government. In this timeframe Missouri became accustomed to the newly imposed martial law, in the article Revoking Civil Liberties, it says “he was unable to convince Missouri’s Republican… to martial law in the state” (Revoking Civil Liberties). This quote is saying, when Martial Law began, Missouri began to support and embrace it. This was an unexpected turn of events for Lincoln, which showed that the states weren’t all of the states weren’t in complete support of him and his actions. This caused many consequences, one of the main one being that it this caused some of the first casualties of the civil war, “His worst fears were realized… first casualties of the Civil War” (Revoking Civil Liberties). This was a cause of him enacting martial law, if it wasn’t for him doing this, these deaths never would have happened. Lincoln caused deaths of innocent people, though it wasn’t him personally, he can still be blamed because of him enacting martial law. Lincoln also may have caused possible deaths in prolonging the Civil War, in the movie Lincoln he says, “keep military preparedness for battle”(Lincoln). The reason he did this, is so that he could secure the passing of the 13th amendment. Though I fully support this amendment and its ideals, I do
