During Lincoln's presidency, he was criticized for taking "extra-constitutional measures” but I think Lincoln’s actions were a reflection of his beliefs in a president’s responsibility to protect. To protect not only from foreign threats, but from domestic ones as well. America had never experienced a domestic rebellion of this size, or one that was creating as much havoc. This caused Lincoln to believe that he had no choice but to exercise his executive power on a much broader scope. He needed to take all measures in order to ensure the safety of the Union.
