    Smith Academy Reflection

This past Thursday I visited the Smith Academy for Excellence and was surprised at how the school worked to help the boys learn best. We learned that most of the boys come from a poverty stricken neighborhood with many family problems. Along with this, a majority of the students were African American but there were also a few Caucasians and Latinos. The age/grade range of the boys is from second grade up until twelfth. They are extremely proud that this is the first year they will have a graduating class, including a young man who had previously graduated in the winter. I found it interesting that, although the men who run the school are Christians and the school is located inside a church, some of the students and teachers are not believers. This is a great way for the Smiths to share God’s word with them if asked. It was helpful to hear Mr. Smith talk about an experience he had where he was able to talk to a student about his faith and give some insight about Christianity and Christ. Most future teachers who are also Christians tend to shy away from talking about their faith out of fear of laws in place; however, by hearing someone who is in charge of their own school finding ways of incorporating this helps me to realize it is possible and should be done because I may be the only one the student or faculty member will hear about…

Adam Smith is often believed to be an economist due to his theories on the economy but he was at heart a philosophical theorist. As we have learned in this course, Smith had theories about the way the economy worked but he attached these theories to human nature and how humans organize and make sense of the social world. In his book The Wealth of Nations Smith discusses the division of labour, and its relation to supply and demand. Additionally he discusses the innate nature of the desire for…

interdependence is an idea that is shared with many other writers. Specifically, the 18th century writers of Steuart and Smith share Hagel’s point of view. Both Steuart and Smith believe self-interest is essential in explaining the creation of the modern world. They agree that when individuals peruse their selfish interests and in turn, become dependent in one another, and consequently create the modern economy. However, they differ in the nature of how these two principles interplay in…

Although John Smith and William Bradford were instrumental to the founding and development of the colonies in the new world, their writings reveal differences in personality, with John Smith being arrogant and self-centered and William Bradford being focused on the greater community which ultimately makes them very different leaders. Smith’s, The General History of Virginia, makes himself seem like the hero of Jamestown, even if it meant stretching the truth. In his account he wrote, “committed…

Adam Smith, the father of microeconomic theories, puts faith in a virtually unregulated, free market that maximizes the dynamic efficiency. In his view, an ideal system of market should be based on free competition, increasing size of market, and considerable capital accumulation. He believes the production function is an increasing return to scale that would expand the market, lead to internal and external economies of scale, and ultimately, lower the cost of production. With the foundation of…
