HUDSON VALLEY HAPPENINGS | HIP SPOT OF THE WEEK: Ör Tavern, Hudson NY In an industrial-inflected, garage-like space on the outskirts of Hudson NY, you’ll find Ör.From the get go this place screams different, the entrance ushers you to walk through a garage door opening into a beautiful funky space. At first you don't know what to make of it as it has a lot going on, a 19 seat bar is positioned front and center and beckons you to be seated and enjoy a libation. There is also a cozy sitting area complete with a fireplace and a gong : not sure if this is used when uncool people enter and can gong them for bringing this ultra hip vibe down a notch. The high ceilings give this tavern an airy and open feeling unlike any of the current spaces in Hudson, the walls are lined with owner Jennifer Tzar's photographs. Her and partner Adam Loomis (talented leather maker) decided to open Ör after moving from Manhatten a year ago.Jennifer says that "We really worked hard to make it have a strange different kind of mix to make it undefinable, its a mystery that has no easy definition" Ör has only been open two months but already has quite the following, I take it has to do with the eclectic offerings and down to earth feel of the space. I was expecting high price points as that seems to be the new trend for any bar that opens in the Hudson Valley, I was relived to find though that Ör is not one of those places. If you love beer then you will love their $5.00 pint rule, any pint any time only…
Flashback: Pearls and feathers, bobs and glamour! Reality: I was sitting at the very back of my poor excuse of a high school’s plain old, bland “English 4” class in Levi mom jeans, a cropped top, and Chuck Taylors; except I wasn’t. I wasn’t at all. (Take One): Pouncing upon my sister’s Macbook Air, I was on a written escapade away from the Upper West Side’s public school nightmare and, instead, running up and down the catwalk at New York’s Couture’s 1956 Fashion Show! In a riveting, platinum…
Film Adaptations: Romeo and Juliet (1968) and West Side Story (1961) Many films have been created based on novels and play scripts. Plays have transitioned from performances on stage to the big cinema screens. Since many legendary play scripts were created before our century, American film directors had to ask themselves, “How can an older piece of work interest the audience of today?”. Directors found it challenging to express an original piece of work while attempting to interest the minds…
As a child growing up I always knew what I wanted to be. Whenever I was asked that famous question, without hesitation, I always replied, "I will be a Doctor and help to heal the sick". I truly believed that. In fact, my determination and drive towards this career path, lead me to easily choose to specialize in the Science Research field at High School for Health Professions and Human Services. This is where I was first introduced to the medical environment and experienced the excitement of it…
spoiled, yet sweet, and she was the funniest person you’d ever meet. She lived in the richest part of Upper East Side, New York, with her parents. Her house was made of stone and had the prettiest detailing. Her yard was always freshly cut with flowers at full bloom. Inside big and beautiful, as well and had too many bedrooms to count. She had a perfect view of New York outside her bedroom window. She had a maid, chef, and all the money in the world. Her parents expected nothing but perfection…
Cheers to Michael Lerner's brilliant delve into Prohibition in New York City! Dry Manhattan gives a riveting taste of how it was in 1920s Prohibition-`dry' (or not so dry indeed) NYC.Dry Manhattan takes us along through the beginning of Prohibition to it's repeal, catching us up in the Roaring Twenties along the way, but even more notably bringing out the undercurrents -the lead-up to and the backdrop of the `dry', speakeasy-nightclub-bootlegging-flapper-filled scene. Dry Manhattan offers a…

The New Museum is located in the Lower East Side on Bowery and opened its doors in 2007 after expanding and relocating from its previous home in SoHo. Likewise, the Whitney by Renzo Piano Workshop was the result of a need of expansion that saw the museum vacate its old largely residential neighborhood in the Upper East Side and into the Meatpacking District neighborhood of Lower Manhattan on Gansevoort Street in 2015. The neighborhoods that these buildings reside in are important because in a…

Within a few years of Lawrence arriving the Colony of Quebec split into Upper and Lower Canada. Upper Canada’s (to be Ontario) first Lieutenant Governor was John Graves Simcoe and one of his many concerns was the threat posed by the newly minted United States and that they may, in the future want to annex the Canadas. He added to the population of Upper Canada by augmenting the regulations to include disaffected Americans that were not Loyalists. Hence, the population in and around the Niagara…
