    Bloodhounds Research Paper

bloodhounds could be as a random act of violence perpetuated by bored, traumatized young men. However this explanation is contradicted by lack of similar incidents committed by the Iowa soldiers in the vicinity of Hamburg. Additionally it fails to not acknowledge the role of the bloodhound image in American politics at this time. Another plausible explanation, that the events in the peach orchard were principally about the peaches, also fails to this second test. While the original encounter between the Iowa soldiers and the dogs sprang from a desire for peaches, the killing of the dogs was far from the most effective means of enjoying the fruit of Butler’s orchard and the killing of the dogs not the attainment of peaches was recorded by Private Blake as the primary objective of the bloodhound detail. A soldier’s mere intimidation of Butler with his musket would have resulted in access to the orchard without the need to organize of a band of men and Butler would have been less likely to report this act to the military authorities. The denial of the peaches and the threat of the hounds was a imbued with greater meaning to the Iowa soldiers due to the sociopolitical ideology with which they aligned themselves. More than two decades ago, Robert Darnton’s groundbreaking historical work, The Great Cat Massacre, found in its eponymous essay that an act of violence against animals can be intended to serve as a social statement. Like the killings of cats committed by eighteenth…

A better argument though it fails the latter test, is that the events in the peach orchard were principally about peaches. This, after all, may seem to some readers the most parsimonious justification for the killing of the dogs: they were the foremost barrier to the attainment of the delicious fruit. The…
