of my name, I mostly think of pink lemonade. To me my name feels smooth, like strawberry sorbet. None of the people who’ve given me nicknames could comprehend how my name feels to me. Maybe that’s a thing only I can gain a full perspective on, which makes it unique and personal. With this being said, Madi Decker gave me the nickname “Elbear” the beginning of sophomore year. I and my friends don’t really know how or why it happened, she just started calling me that and it caught on. Personally, I like it a lot - having those connections with your friends. Another one that every adult at least fifty or older calls me “Ellie Mae.” The reason that one stuck (yes, I asked my mom about the reasoning behind it) was because it was off of Beverly Hillbillies, a trendy show in the mid-1960’s. It doesn’t bother me too much, but I love my middle name, Rose. It’s elegant and classic and I feel like Mae makes me sound immature and tacky. It could be a personal thing, but I’ve never really liked this nickname. I just smile at the adults who call me this and go about my day. And then lastly, there’s my favorite one: Ells. I love this nickname because it makes me feel close to the person who says it, which has only been my dad and Chase. It feels casual, which isn’t how I am at all. I’m not intense, I just stress out easily over frivolous things. I typically love nicknames, as long as it doesn’t reflect back on a movie show, song, or any other well-known program. If I’m going to have a…
Pinegrove is proof that music can seem like total rubbish on first listen, and after repeated listens, it can become a surprise gem. When “Old Friends" kicks in, the roughly recorded country / pop punk sound and the unflattering (at first) southern drawl lead singer Evan puts on is enough to make you dismiss Pinegrove as nothing more than a overhyped gimmick. The band is from Montclair, New Jersey, but it sounds as though they are trying to mimic country music, while adding an emo sort of…
For the assignment, going retro, I chose to watch several episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies. This was an American sitcom that ran from 1962- 1971 on the CBS network. The show was created and written by Paul Henning and produced by Filmways Television. Both Al Simon and Martin Ransohoff were executive producers for this series which began in black and white but was switched to color in 1965. The shows had several main characters that came in and out of each episode, some of the most prominent…
Jarl Erik looked over his papers with an angry look. "Felix why are we losing money!" Erik yelled at his steward. "Sir the harvest wasn't good because of the raiders from the east valley, so we didn't have a good trade this year" Felix said in a quivering voice. Felix never liked it when his master got mad because it alway ended bad. "Well then it looks like we need more money so this month we will charge them a 1/4 more than usual" said Erik. "But sir the harvest means the people don't have…
worried her the most was how long she could stay hidden. Few weeks before, she planned it all out. Tomorrow was making pancakes in the morning and then going to the library later to find any newspapers or articles. Beverly and Billie could explore the town at their own leisure while Courtney is busy. Beverly opened the car door followed by Billie and then Courtney.…
thinking back to the books I read as a child, such as The Magic Tree House and Dear America series. I was addicted to reading as a child and that love has continued until today. I think one of the main purposes of children 's literature is to encourage children to want to continue reading throughout their lives, and by doing so, they will learn more about the world around them and learn to explore their imagination. The books I read definitely did this for me. In The Magic Tree House series, I…
I took the bus around the Los Angeles area on a Saturday. The bus I used was the 30/330 that goes from Sunset Boulevard into East Los Angeles. This was mostly what seemed to be residential areas and the main streets of Los Angeles. While riding the bus I saw the difference within the people through the surrounding buildings. The visible wealth disparity between the residents of Los Angeles is very stark and can be seen within neighborhoods. Starting at Sunset, near the Greystone Mansion, the…
Mom, did you see Aunty Milly? Her skin has gotten so light. You don’t think that she’s bleaching it right? Isn’t that terrible for your skin? I don’t even know why she’s doing it, it doesn’t look natural she’s a brownish orange color. It’s really sad, it’s not a really good example for Vic because she’ll probably feel the need to do it too. Mom, why do people get terrible weaves, when they could just wear their hair out. It would look so much better, everyone knows it’s not real. What is so…
University, had met Graham at Florida Bible Institute years earlier and later he heard Graham preach at a Youth for Christ rally. Riley began thinking about how he would run Northwestern schools after he died and he thought of Graham. Graham was not interested at first, but, after Riley’s persistent requests, Graham accepted. In January 1948, Graham became the youngest college president in the whole nation. Graham had a lot more responsibilities and would soon have even more. Graham was about to…
that they have little influence of changing or removing leaving the door upon for judgement of the individual but in today’s society we identity the individual by what they are unable to due rather than their positive contributions to society. For example, one of the greatest minds in the world is Stephen Hawking, is almost completely paralyzed yet he has contributed more to the world than most physically able people. The next unchangeable factor of Identity is whatever skin tone we are born…
