Eleanor Rigby is a 1966 rock/pop song written primary by Paul McCartney. However it is credited as Lennon-McCartney due to John Lennon’s work on the lyrics. (The Beatles Website) Eleanor Rigby was released as part of the album Revolver which was on the UK top charts for 34 weeks, seven of which were spent in the first slot. Revolver, also according to The Beatles website, was on US charts for 77 weeks never leaving the top ten. The original double string quartet arrangement was composed by…
first, many nuns, specifically Sister Mary Robert, struggled with singing loud and confidently. As a result, she worked with her sisters to become braver to sing more modern music. During church one day, all of the sisters sang a song with a fast tempo and upbeat. This portrays that the nuns are finally happy about their job because the music was upbeat. By the end of the show, the nuns all sang religiously, yet comfortably in church. They sang loud and dismissed the modest norms as being a nun.…
physicalized them using the terminology of LMA. Some of Shakespeare’s evocative words quickly encouraged a physical response just by how they sounded, ‘enfettered’. In the actual movement, I didn’t vary my tempo or engage with the while space. A lesson to toake away is to be more aware of varying tempo and being less afraid of little, still moments and gestures. The piece felt fragmented by the empty space between…
Jazz History Concert Report II For my final concert writing critique, I decided to attend the live Ball State Student Jazz Combos on Tuesday, November 8; this event took place in Choral Hall inside of the university’s Music Instruction Building. The wooden hall was smaller than I thought it would have been, but it gave the concert setting a more intimate feel. There were three groups presenting that day, each under a different director. Because each group did not have a specific name, I had to…
movement starts with an oboe playing in a sorrowful and cool tone. When the winds and strings joined, the dynamic and tempo became pianissimo and largo. The wind and string instruments followed the sequence of the oboe. When I listen to this piece, I pictured a caterpillar all alone in the winter going into its cocoon. When the wind and string instruments gradually became louder and the tempo became vivace. It was as if there was some kind of transformation happening. The timbre suddenly became…
The two clips I chose to compare and contrast were an NYC jazz and contemporary company’s performance of “Steam Heat” choreographed by Lisa Donmall-Reeve and Lindsey’s Stirling’s performance of a Les Miserables medley. Both clips exhibited a high degree of musicality and grabbed my attention almost immediately. They incorporated lighting and costuming with an incredible mastery to enrich the performance. I highly enjoyed the music that accompanied both dances and thought that the choreography…
Dance may be perceived by some as merely choreography overlaid with music that governs the tempo and overall feel of the piece, however the art of dance is rooted in deeper facets such as culture, ritual, spirituality, and tradition. The culture and traditions that lead to certain dance styles and moves can be traced back somewhat to the economic and political status of the time period and location of the dance. For example, in Mary Wigman’s Hexantanz, or “Witch Dance” (1914), it’s not hard to…
I recently visited Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall to view the Songs for the season. This was my first time ever attending a show. My first experience was great and I really enjoyed it. To begin I would like to say the production and the displays were magnificent. When I walked in even before the show began they gave the perfect lighting with the snowflakes projected on the closed curtains. They also projected a Christmas tree and sat nutcrackers on each side giving a great winter theme. As it…
but the sub-genre is generally pop orchestral. In the background you can clearly hear the violin players playing over and over which sounds spectacular and the violin sound gives it a magical feeling to the music. Menzel sang the song in a very fast tempo, but it gave it a very exciting feeling because of the pop feeling it gives. The form of the music is the ABAC form, because in the C section it provides a sense of conclusion which is the title of the name, “Defying Gravity”. In the song…
These bebop performers changed the jazzy danceable music to “music for musicians”. Some of the great bebop performers of the time where Bud Powell and Charlie Parker. Bebop was able to play faster tempos and more creative syncopations due to it not being a danceable music. There were three points that Samuel Floyd stated which shows that blues is a fundamental part of bebop. First, new harmonic conception led to more variety. Secondly, more refined…
