trained in singing and dancing, which is the “basis of trainee program”, as well as foreign languages, acting, public speaking, rapping, and other skills they will need as pop idols (Jung). Trainees work on perfecting their skills every day from morning to night. If they are a student, the trainees will “start training after school” and their hours usually go “from 6pm to 10pm” (Jung). In addition to the long hours of training, trainees may also receive homework in which they are to “keep their weight under control through regular exercise and food intake regulation” (Jung). Years of training for trainees varies, based on the individual’s mastery of idol basics. For example, 2AM’s Jo Kwon had to endure “seven years’ training period” while Super Junior’s Kyuhyun was able to debut “after only three months’ training period” (Jung). One can’t imagine the strenuous work that must be put into the program by the trainees in order to fit the industry’s vision of a K-pop idol. However, even with so much hard work, trainees are not guaranteed to debut. Some “give it up at their free will” due to the demanding nature of the program while others simply don’t have what it takes (Jung). Those who truly have the motivation and drive to become a K-pop idol will make it. Only after they’ve fully completed the idol training are they allowed to sign a contract with their company and debut. These contracts, however, will slowly eat away at the eager, soon-to-debut idol with its harsh conditions.…
