One of the sentences was “He was at the mall, looking hungrily at all the signs and different restaurants in the food court.” (Frinkle) Instead of putting the –ily in “hungrily”, she replaced the word with “hungry”. This kind of Affix is called derivational suffix, which means it “alter[s] a word’s meaning and its grammatical function. Common suffixes include –ly as in likely, -ive as in selective, and –ment as in excitement.” (Graves, 2011, pg. 190) Another sentence she had an error on was “The tempting smells of cheese and pepperoni led him to the pizza, but that just compounded the problems.” (Frinkle) In the sentence, Alexandra substituted “compound” for “compounded.” This kind of suffix is called “Inflectional suffixes,” which “make[s] a word plural of indicate[s] tense, as do the –s in dogs and the –ed in snowed.” (Graves, 2011, pg. 190) If the word “problems” was actually problem, then “compound” would be right since it will not be past tense anymore, but I do not think she took into consideration the “s” at the end of “problems.” Strategies are a great way to advance in your reading.
