Stem cells are non specialized cells in your body that have the potential to create more specific types of cells such as blood, brain, tissue or muscle. Because of their unique traits, stem cells have improved millions of lives all over the world. Over the past couple of years, stem cell research has been getting a lot of heat because of a cloud of controversy surrounding it. As a result, the US government (among multiple other countries) deny funding for it and only the wealthy private labs are able to experiment with stem cells. If the government were to fund stem cell research, there would be significant advances in science medicine that would lead to making the our world a better place. The main issues that cause the controversy is over…
into Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields or naturally allow for students to sort themselves into their own career choices? Historically girls have not gone into the STEM field while attending college or entering into the career field, and many people believe that something needs to change within the educational system. Women are skilled in the STEM field but feel that they will be stigmatized by pursuing a career or further education in the field. “If STEM programs…
most successful job fields in America today is the STEM (science/technology/math/engineering) field, which includes occupations in the physical sciences, engineering, math, and technology. Innovation within science and technology in the U.S. is extremely important for America’s economy and competitiveness. However looking at the STEM field, there is a still a major gender disparity within the field and a significantly less amount of women within the STEM field. The movement of women in STEM…
The local issue that my project identified was that students, but girls in particular, were not interested in science and considered it to be boring. This is reflected by elective science and engineering classes in high school being male-dominated, with the exception of biology and medical themed classes. I found this very interesting because it was a reflection of the workforce in terms of STEM fields. I do not think that girls are naturally worse at science. One thing that explains this gap…
For example, when women try to enter the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) field there are so many restrictions that they encounter. Society views a STEM career as a “man’s” job and it therefore leads to unwanted circumstances. Women should have their equal rights when it comes to education, there shouldn’t be so many hurdles for them to overcome, and women need to step up their game it’s a dog eat dog world, and the STEM field should not be underrepresented for women and…
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics provide the innovative framework for a nation’s technological advancements. Commonly referred to as STEM, these sectors aid in the nation’s vitality and high standard of living. In 2005, three influential reports, released within a five-month period, Innovate America, Tapping America’s Potential, and Rising Above the Gathering Storm, argue that the US is declining in all aspects of STEM; however, some analysts disagree. This perceived weakness in…
influential reports entitled Innovate America, Tapping America’s Potential, and Rising Above the Gathering Storm were released within a five month period to the public. These articles argue that the education system at the time was leading to a decline in the quality of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related jobs. These jobs are widely believed to be the future of the United States of America, and the driving force of innovation worldwide. Many important figures, as…
promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) focused education, there has been a substantial relapse in both the size and autonomy of the STEM field workforce (Master et al., 2017). The overarching rationale surrounding the concept of males being the most prominent figures vested in the STEM field has been widely accepted, thus exaggerating the presence of gender differences in interests and choices directed towards STEM. Notwithstanding the increasing academic enrollment…
mandated emphasis on STEM. This field never held high popularity in a nation of individuality, thus, it lacked in the area. After realizing its faux pas, the nation experienced a surge in STEM. Consequently, the surge held minimum effect on the industry, for this field causes challenges with the constantly changing technology. That didn’t hinder the majority that entered the field, for where one quit another rose to the challenge that STEM produced. Due to those that accepted the challenge a…
Lilian Cu Spindler English 1301 3 December 2015 Gender Inequality in STEM Fields Background It is no secret that girls and women are underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematic fields, even in this day and age. Even students agree with each other that girls should be more celebrated in these areas. For example, “In 1968, Caltech male students argued that nerds needed a civilizing female presence. At MIT, which had admitted women since the 1870s but treated them as…
