A Complicated Kindness: The Journey to Adulthood The importance of reading novels throughout English courses has become highly crucial, as it allows students to understand current issues and develop strong literature skills. The fictional novel, A Complicated Kindness, written by Miriam Toews is about a sixteen year old girl who lives in a Mennonite community and is eventually kicked out of the society by the end of the book due to her rebellious attitude. A Complicated Kindness, by Miriam Toews is a novel that should be integrated in the grade eleven English curriculum due to the strong connections with the adolescent struggle to find one’s self. Toews’ credibility as an author and relevance for a teenage audience is clear through her overcoming of personal obstacles being transferred through the protagonist, Nomi; whose coming of age closely resembles that of Vittorio Innocente in Lives of the Saints which is already an existent course work. The author, Miriam Toews, is a positive figure for youth as she overcame many life obstacles and eventually earned many awards, displaying her hard work being paid off. Toews wrote this novel and knows what she was writing about, since she was raised in a Mennonite community as well. The protagonist in the novel seems to continuously talk about punishments and penalties in the town for committing minor offenses. Miriam Toews states, “But the emphasis in the town on punishment and shame, and joylessness, the degree of severity and…

In the Miriam Toews’ A Complicated Kindness, the irony is used throughout the book to get deeper meanings across. An example of this ironically laced humor would be Nomi explaining what there is to do in East Village ‘”Golf was another one because it consisted of using a rod to hit something much, much smaller than yourself and a lot of men in this town enjoyed that…

The concept of ‘fair play’ relates to cycling today. People are simply cycling for the benefits it brings like convenience and health. They don’t need to invest a substantial amount of time and money in buying the most expensive bicycle and gear or watching competitive cycling on television. What results from different attitudes towards cycling is a number of sub-groups within the sport. Steinbach et al (2011) to a certain extent found a number of different ‘types’ of cyclists through the…
