    Early in this story, the mother dies and she is surrounded by her three young children. The mother died because she was a drunkard and lost the control of her way and fell on a piece of wood placed beneath her door: “Idleness, sin, and drunkenness had done their miserable work, and the dead mother lay cold and still aimed her wretched children. She had fallen upon the threshold of her own door, in a drunken fit and died in the presence of her frightened little ones” (1). Being jobless, the mother became an alcoholic person who suffered from alcoholism. This behavior made her not to be able to work and provide the basic needs of her three children. Furthermore, she ended up committing many sins such as binged drinking that led her to lose control of her life; she could not work in order to provide food for her children. The names of her three children and their ages are as follows: John was the oldest boy and he is twelve, he was strong ready to do the farm work. Kate was ten or eleven, she was intelligent and clever to learn and do any work that would maintain her living. She needed someone to teach and guide her what to do. Maggie was the youngest and she was bedridden for she had fallen and hurt her back. No one in the town loves to take care of a sick child except Joe, who had a human heart and risk to bring her in his home and restore a new life upon her. 2.
