Both posters feature the protagonists of the films, but only one gives a clue about the protagonist: the man holding the box in Gremlins alludes to the teenager, who is given a gremlin for Christmas (where the trouble first begins). The Terminator poster, however, does not give any clues about its protagonist, Sarah Connor. This may be because having only Schwarzenegger on the poster could appeal to its target audience better than featuring a woman on the poster. Along these same lines, there is no headlining actor on the Gremlins poster, and the man almost fades into the black background, but the poster for The Terminator puts a red, bolded “Schwarzenegger” text at the top. In Gremlins, this demonstrates that humans are not in control most of the time, and in The Terminator that the designer/author wished to appeal to the audience by making it clear that a leading man was featured in the film. The text is centered and orderly in the Gremlins poster, quite the opposite of the hectic mess that transpires throughout the film, which is different than the way The Terminator has some of its text aligned to the left of the poster, possibly hinting at the movie’s plot where Sarah Connor’s life is thrown off-center. As a whole, I believe both posters do a fine job of using rhetorical appeals and various design elements to attract an audience to their film. Not every film is perfectly reflected by its poster, but you can learn a lot from the posters by looking deeper than the surface.…
