“It’s normal” I thought “everything is going to be just fine.” As 7 o’clock approached, I recited the speech in my head multiple times. I was surprised at how I had managed to learned it by heart with exact detail. By 7:30 pm I was sitting down in the first row, waiting for my time to come. The moment where I had to devour my shyness and nervousness to effectively deliver my Salutatorian speech. “Now, please welcome to the stage our Salutatorian; Jose Rojas.” Applauses. Then an abrupt silence that allowed only my heartbeat to be heard. Thump, thump. I presented myself confident but as I walked to the stage, I felt the anxiety consuming me. I was sure I was going to trip with my gown and fall face-first to the ground. Making a fool out of myself. My legs felt weak and wobble more and more with every step I took. At this moment, I realized that a third place wasn’t such a bad idea after all. Who was I kidding? I wasn’t…
Why I Deserve This Scholarship I believe that a community involved, hard-working, and athletic person is what makes a successful high school student. Throughout my four years of high school, that is what I became. Being a student-athlete and doing volunteer work has taught me what it takes to be a leader. All of these qualities add up to a great future for me. My schoolwork has always been important to me. I love to tackle challenging work because I learn more. I am the salutatorian of my…
The Hope and The Unseen are mainly about an unprivileged kid who goes to Ballou High School. Out of the 1,389 students, 79 are on the honor roll with at least a “B” average. The school drop-out rate is nearly 50%, and academics are not a priority for these kids. The kids would get 100$ in a check for getting straight A’s. Cedric was the only one who was a male honor student out of all the kids. Cedric applied to this MIT programs that was called M.I.T.E.S. He got accepted in it and he got to…
With it being graduation time the paper is full of articles about academics. On Tuesday May 24th , The Courier had an article entitled “Carey to hold graduation on Sunday and it stated that the co-valedictorians and the salutatorian were all three females. The same thing was evident in the article titled “Riverdale High School commencement Sunday” when it stated that all four of the valedictorians and the salutatorian were females. The school environment is now becoming an issue and the…
Robert. E. Lee was a very important person of the Civil War. Robert E Lee had a very successful life; with war and with wits. Robert E Lee was born in Virginia, the fifth child of Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee. In 1829 he was graduated as the salutatorian of his class at West Point without having a single demerit in his four years there. Commissioned in the Corps of Engineers, he served under General Winfield Scott in the Mexican War, in which he distinguished himself in the Battles of Veracruz,…
Your kid is average, has a 3.2 gpa, and played football once? Perfect. Here’s $30,000. Just make sure you check the box that states that he is eligible for free lunch. Now, this kid gets to go to medical school for free, while salutatorian is flipping burgers at McDonald’s to pay off that one book on “The History of Community College”. For this reason, I have devised a plan to make college tuition and financial aid fair for everyone. I propose to take away financial help and scholarships, all…
Many people feel that American society is too competitive, but it can be a good thing. Competition encourages people to work towards improvement. It also teaches people how to accept failure. Competition is also beneficial to consumerism. It helps to keep prices fair and lower. Some may see fierce competition as a negative aspect of society; however, they should consider a world without it. In order to make better products, companies need some competition. Take Apple and Android for example.…
College debt is almost inevitable for all college students due to colleges expensive tuition and the lack of scholarships for students who have 3.5 GPA in high school and 22 or higher on the act. Most colleges only offer scholarships to students who have a 30 or above on the act;And almost all universities only offer a full unpaid scholarship if you have a 34 or above on the act and were either valedictorian or salutatorian, but yet most high school football players get full scholarships from…
For centuries, even when Cape Verdeans traveled to Southern Massachusetts to join the whaling industry, Cape Verdeans were hard workers. This is also true for my family, and now myself. Coming from Freetown, all my life I attended schools where I was mainly the only minority. In this, a substantial amount of people underestimated my ability and intellect on an academic level. By working hard, not only was I able to break both academic and social barriers as a minority within the school, but I…
Good morning Sister Janice, staff, parents and students. I am very honored to be the 2016-2017 class Salutatorian. My hard work and dedication for the past years have paid off. My past years at Our Lady of Guadalupe have allowed me to change my inmost being. They have allowed me to truly discover myself and my true potential. It has been an unbelievable journey from the beginning of kindergarten to the end of eighth grade. There were many memories I cherished over the years. I remember when we…
