Figure 21: Dependence of the penetration depth on dwell times for different indentation peak loads Figure 22: Dependence of the penetration depth on dwell time for different indentation peak loads in ln-ln plot 5.4 HV vs. penetration depth Figure 23 shows the dependence of the Vickers hardness on the indenter penetration depth for 100mN to 1000mN and 10 s to 60 s dwelling time. The highest hardness value is 15.6GPa. As the indenter penetration depth increases, the hardness value decreases. This phenomenon suggests that there exist an indentation size effect (ISE). The ISE, according to Nix and Gao’s model, is related to the concept of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) (Nye 1953), an inverse relationship between the GND density and the indentation depth causes the ISE. Besides, the surface hardening that gain from mechanical polishing is also considered an important factor that causes the ISE. Figure 23: Dependence of Vickers hardness on the indenter penetration depth with linear fitting result 5.5 Hardness curve Figure 24 shows the hardness result from microindentation tests at different loadings with 3 comparative dwelling periods. Hardness value is relatively steady with increasing the indentation load. In addition, 20 s group subjected to the shortest dwelling period attains highest hardness result, when the dwelling period is extended to 60 s, the hardness value decreases from 14.5 GPa at 20 s dwelling to about 12 GPa. The measurements of our world strive to quantify the quality of our lives. The scales we use to measure ourselves and how we feel, fail to understand the concept of life itself. The tears of joy felt by a mother; the symphony of silence held by a survivor; the loudness of a murmur spoken as a prayer. Life is a composition, led by a melody, woven piece by piece, tied by our hopes and colored by our sorrows. Like darkness is the absence of light, pain is measured by the absence of happiness.…
Injustice and the Importance of Being a Man in A Lesson Before Dying Justitia, the goddess of justice, is portrayed with a blindfold holding scales and a sword, but she, in applying her scales and sword, has never been colorblind in the U. S. 1[1] Ernest J. Gaines accuses the legal injustice against the black population through an innocent convict, Jefferson's death in A Lesson Before Dying. However, Gaines penetrates the fact that the legal injustice is rather a result than a…
1___Scale is a geographic tool for creating and interpreting maps. Scale also has a broader meaning for geographers, as the relationship between any phenomenon and Earth as a whole. 2___A region is an area characterized by a unique combination of features. 3___A formal region is an area within which everyone has one or more distinctive characteristics in common, whereas A functional region is an area organized around a node or focal point. 4___An example of a functional region is the…
For instance, in the text box that reads “You Don’t Have to be Perfect to be a Perfect Parent. There are thousands of kids in foster care that will take you just as you are” the first sentence “You Don’t Have to be Perfect to be a Perfect Parent.” is a slightly larger font than the rest of the text. Therefore the PSA wants to familiarize you with the message that even if you are not perfect, you can still be a perfect parent to your child. The text font is also something to take in. Although…
Ruby Bridges broke through the barriers of racism in an all white school. At the age of six, Ruby was chosen to take a series of tests to see if she qualified to attend an all white school. Ruby was the first African American to attend an all white school. On Ruby’s first day, there were mobs of chaos and parents there to remove their children, but Ruby was brave through it all. Because of Ruby’s courage, books have been written and paintings were painted such as “The Problem We All Live Within”…
Of course a good point that gets brought up here is that even though your child won 't legally have to go to a specific school, your budget might still make the decision for you. Many Americans assume that public schools are not nearly as expensive as sending their children to private school when, in fact , Rockwell provides a link to a proposal called “The Universal Tuition Tax Credit: A Proposal to Advance Parental Choice in Education” that proves that public education ends up costing parents…
Society in today’s age states that all girls should have a certain image of themselves and that they all should look a certain way to fit in. Many of these images that girls are supposed to have are represented by famous models internationally. They are supposed to have golden sun-kissed skin, long perfect hair, slim toned bodies, and well defined jaw lines. Media play a large role in many self-esteem problems that many teenagers face around the world. Norman Rockwell, an artist from the early…
chose to compare was the “Immigrants to New York City (Jewish Refugees)” painting by Minerva Teichert, and the painting “Lift Up Thine Eyes” by Norman Rockwell. Minerva Teichert’s painting was an oil on canvas, and was done in 1938. Norman Rockwell’s painting was an oil on board painting, done in 1957. Both of these paintings are from the BYU Museum of Art. These paintings are two different scenes of New York. Rockwell depicts New Yorker’s with hunched shoulders, low heads, and eyes cast down as…
Breaking Home Ties Critical Analysis Breaking Home Ties is one of many paintings by Norman Rockwell. It was created in 1954 and since then has been a well known painting to artists and art critics. The detail in the scene and expression on the two men’s faces make this picture a true masterpiece. With the expressions on the characters, one can clearly tell there is a story behind this one framed moment. The man on the left looks over worked and rather numb in the face, while the younger…
