pathogenic bacteria inhabiting in different parts of the body especially the gastrointestinal tract and these organisms are referred to as enteric bacterium that are placed in the family Enterobacteriaceae. They are characterized by their ability to glucose/lactose fermenting, oxidase negative, facultative anaerobes and being a gram-negative bacilli (Tortora, Funke and Case 2010). The whole purpose of conducting the unknown lab for enteric bacteria is to apply the lab techniques I have learned and acquired, so that I can interpret those biochemical test results to identify the unknown enteric bacterium that was used for this project. The unknown bacteria used for this lab project were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, and Citrobacter freundii. In the world such as the medical field, biochemical test are used to diagnose what bacteria triggers the symptoms of a disease or infection. The different types of test and media that was used for this project were Gram stain, Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) agar, MacConkey agar, BromoCresol Purple lactose broth, BromoCresol Purple glucose broth, Sulfur-Indole-Motility (SIM) deep medium/slant, oxidase test, citrate test, and urease test. The students created their own dichotomous key and before obtaining their own unknown bacteria, their dichotomous key first has to be approved by the professor. An unknown culture #63 in a…
The Land and the sea James Joyce one of Irelands greatest writers considered his characters as ways of the reader seeing the world from a different perspective. In The Proteus chapter in Ulysses and in Dubliners Joyce questions the land and the sea and represents Irish life in his work. The idea of the sea against the land as some sort of border can be seen through Joyce’s characters Evelyn in Dubliners and Stephen in Proteus.(Joyce, Ulysses) The paralysis of Irish life is contemplated in…
reported with the Proteus syndrome. 112 It may cause paraspinal hamartoma. 110 Protuberance of the skull, 113 structural and functional asymmetry of the central nervous system, 114 hydrocephalus and mental retardation are also some features of proteus syndrome. 113 Epilepsy and ohtahara syndrome is diagnosed in children affected by Proteus syndrome associated with infantile spasms, myoclonia, and partial epilepsy in newborn infants. 108 In Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS), diffuse…
Pathophysiology: Proteus syndrome is caused by an activating somatic mosaic mutation in AKT1, a gene which encodes the well-studied serine/threonine kinase PKB/Akt .1,2 Akt is the key mediator of the PI3K signaling pathway. In response to a growth signal (e.g. IGF, EGF) and the autophosphorylation of a receptor tyrosine kinase, PI3K is recruited and activated, generating PIP¬3 molecules at the lipid membrane. These partially activate Akt and also activate PDK1/2, which complete the Akt…
Proteus syndrome is an exceptionally rare disorder that effects the growth of a wide spectrum of tissue types in the human body. Virtually any organ or structure of the body is vulnerable to its affects, which are most commonly characterized as being hamartomatous malformations. Due to its unpredictable nature, those of whom suffer from this condition experience distinctive mutations of their bodily tissues which appear asymmetrically and can be located randomly throughout the body. Although…
Ting, a twelve-year-old Chinese immigrant female, is medically diagnosed with Proteus syndrome. She has soft tissue masses in her chest and neck, a malformed mastoid bone, a brain tumor, a nonmalignant abdominal tumor, a neurogenic bladder, and musculoskeletal deformities. Additionally, her face, head, and digits are asymmetrical, her legs are of unequal length, and she has a gastrostomy feeding tube. At age 2 years she developed a brain infection, resulting in developmental delays and seizures.…
The condition was first described by Dr. Samia Temtamy and John Rogers in 1976. The syndrome is named after the Greek goddess proteus who can change his shape. The most thought of person when people think of this condition is John Merrick, commonly known as the elephant man. The condition is rare only about a hundred people have it today. It is still something to worry about when you have a child. Proteus syndrome is the overgrowth of bones, skin, and tissue.…
Proteus Mirabilis Proteus mirabilis is defined by the slide share website as a disease caused by microbial invasion of the genitourinary track that extends from the renal cortex of the kidney to the urethral meatus. Proteus mirabilis can be laboratory diagnosed by the specimen collection, transported and storage and laboratory methods, but the laboratory methods that would be focused on is specimen collection. It is often the first determine diagnosis and treatment which would give a more…
In class, there was a performance done by the Proteus Quartet today. The Proteus Quartet are from Rhode Island College and consists of two violinists, John Sumerlin (violin 1) and Sam Breene (violin2), a violist, Sue Culpo, and cellist, Steve Laven. On this day, this group played Beethoven's Op.18 No.6 “Scherzo: Allegro Con Brio” and Op.127 “Allegro Maestoso” , one of Dvorak’s waltzes, and Star Wars as the mystery piece. One of the pieces that was excellently performed was Beethoven's Op.18…
The story of Proteus, the “Prophetic old man of the sea”, describes the said subject as omniscient and supernatural, possessing seemingly unlimited knowledge, including all forms of time, including past, present, and future. Various Knowledge seekers, notably Menelaus in Homer’s interpretation, and Aristaeus in Virgil’s, would seek Proteus for enlightenment. He would Grant the knowledge in question if and only if, the requester was able to restrain Proteus. The trick is, Proteus has complete…
